YOUR PERSONAL Technology ASSISTANT

These days most of us use technology devices (a computer, tablet or phone, etc.) but for most the technology how-to is not our primary focus. This blog will focus on distilling the many technical details down to practical advice for finding and using technology as a convenience and time-saver.

I will summarize what things I considered when choosing a particular device and then how it turned out. I may link to one or more of the many in-depth product reviews available for those that want more detail.

Additionally, I provide on-site assistance focusing on just the information you need to accomplish a certain task. See the Menu: Services > Overview for more information and the Menu: Pricing for an introductory offer.

Double your desk size for not much money

02/12/20 update: My monitor setup has grown to three!

A PC monitor is often referred to as the desktop. The analogy works well as it is a place on which to put stuff that you are working on. Just like on a regular desk, it is nice to be able to have space to spread out your stuff. The price of PC monitors has plummeted in recent years. (more…)

Dreaded Call from Credit Card Company – How to Minimize the Resultant Hassle

Most of us have had the experience … the credit card company calls to say your card information has been compromised, or there have been fraudulent charges. Your card must be cancelled, and one with a new number must be issued. This wouldn’t be a hassle if you never put my card on file with online retailers (think Amazon.com, etc.) or setup recurring bill payments charged to your credit card.

I do both of the above. But after enough number changes, I needed help to remember all the places I needed to go to update the credit card on file. (more…)

      I didn’t know about a couple of these 10 time-saving tech tips

I have been using personal computers for over 30 years, so I figured that I knew most of the time saver tips. For whatever reason, I was drawn to watch this Ted Talk “David Pogue: 10 top time-saving tech tips.” Part of the introduction included:

“And yes, you may know a few of these already — but there’s probably at least one you don’t.”

Well, that was a challenge, and sure enough, they were right. I had totally forgotten about the use of the space bar for web page reading, and had no inkling of double click & drag. What about you? What are some of your favorite tips?

Here is an outline of the tips. He elaborates in the short video.

      1. press <space bar> on a web page to page down (<shift>+<space bar> to go up)
      2. on fields with a long selection list (like state), press the first letter of the state until the one you want shows up (press M 8 times for Missouri or T 2 times for Texas)  (more…)

        More apps is not better

Having lots of apps to choose from is good, but acquiring more apps is not necessarily better. Every application you use requires some learning and overhead. I suggest using the minimum number of apps to handle all of the different types of information you use the majority of the time. My current favorites are:

To be sure, I have many more apps, but 80+ percent of my information needs are satisfied with one or more of the above.

          Is your backup getting everything?

A client asked me to help her tame her huge volume of pictures. Her hardware vendor had recommended Adobe Photoshop Elements (PSE), which I personally believe is one of the best photo organizers on the market. I installed the software, and showed her just a structured approach so as not to be overwhelmed by the huge task of organizing 10,000 plus photos. As I was leaving …
