Data backup: cloud is good, cloud & local is better

At some point, the data on your computer will be lost or compromised. The compromise could come from a hardware failure, theft, lightning, virus, or any number of other causes. There are a lot of good cloud based backup programs out there. I recommend CrashPlan because they include the ability to backup to other computers and local storage devices even in their free plan. The reason this is important is that if your computer crashes, likely you will need to restore gigabytes of data. If your backup is only stored online (in the cloud), it will take days or weeks to download everything. By also storing your data on a physical hard drive attached to your computer or (better) a friend’s computer, then, short of a major disaster, you will be able to get your data back much faster.
